Hello, I just finished putting a rebuilt engine in my camry. My transmission has 180k miles and I have not drained the fluid since getting the car at 130k. During the engine install I drained the transmission pan via the plug (color was a nice pinkish red and not dirty looking), and lost about half to a full quart from the cv axle holes on the tranny. When I removed the torque converter from the old engine and put it on the new engine I was careful to not spill any fluid from it.
After putting the engine and transmission back in, I filled oil, radiator, and added 2.5 quarts of the genuine Toyota IV ATF to the transmission to start. After priming the engine with oil and going through 3 rounds of letting the it idle for 20 minute intervals and cool off, I drove about 3 miles then checked the tranny fluid. It was at the cold mark so I added a quart. After driving again I it was low so I added half a quart. Still low after that so half a quart more for a total of 4.5 quarts added. Now it reads perfectly between the hot marks on the dipstick.
Thinking everything was ok I drove it to work and back (20 mile round trip). Just before getting home my check engine light comes on with P0741. Since the TCC solenoid is one of the primary reasons for this code, I thought it'd be best to check it first. I can't find any information about where the TCC solenoid is located. Sorry for the long story but I just want to be detailed in how I went about things.
I checked the transmission fluid level in the following manner each time:
1. Drive car until operating temp reached.
2. Park on level surface
3. Shift through each gear on the shifter with about 2 seconds between each shift.
4. Return back to Park gear and leave car running
5. Check dipstick level
I appreciate any tips and let me know if you need additional information!
What causes the P0741 code?
- Faulty TCC
- Faulty torque converter lockup solenoid
- Internal short in the TCC solenoid
- Wiring to the TCC solenoid that is damaged
- Faulty valve body
- Faulty Transmission Control Module (TCM)
- Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
- Damage of the wiring harness to the transmission
- Restricted hydraulic passages from dirty transmission fluid
solenoids are in the belly of the beast ... the valve body
