At random times when I hit my brakes, it feels like it goes soft, gets super hard, and then suddenly gives and I feel like the brakes do hardly anything to stop the car (it does eventually stop though). I hear a metallic clanging when it does this as well.
Car is an automatic 2004 Ford Escape Limited with about 189000 miles on it

Have you physically examined your brakes for problems?

maybe the booster is going out
