(I’m assuming your car is a conventional automatic and not a CVT)

Sounds like your shifter (the lever in your cabin) or it’s cable has some issues.

If your car has an OBD2 port, Go to a shop that has a full system scanner -and have them check what output does the shift lever have - if it has inconsistent readings, get a cheap used lever or clean your existing one.

(but this is usually an issue only on complex European cars - shifter blind sticking on Volvos and shifter position sensor failing on VWs.)

alternatively, something I saw happen on older cars, especially Mazda’s, is the lever being physically attached to the gearbox with a cable - that cable can stretch or it’s sensor cause other issues.

You can just start the car in N (at your risk, who knows if this is an indication of a more serious issue), but any shop that has any clue of what they’re doing should be able to solve this for under $100.

On an automatic, the Parking position jams to differentials output - when you’re sitting on your breaks, you’re basically doing the same (so it’s most likely not an internal issue)
