What do you think about a 2004 Subaru Legacy 35th anniversary edition with 177,xxx miles on it for 3,000$ ?

If the head gaskets have not been replaced yet you'd be in for a very expensive repair job. If the gaskets have already been taken care of (ask to see receipts) and you can get the price down to about half that it might work out OK. Other things to check are the front drive axles (the inner joints get cooked by the exhaust) and the exhaust "Y" pipe which is expensive to replace. Of course get a mechanic to check everything out before pulling the trigger.
