a friend of mine (we use his van to scuba dive + kayak) has 2004 Toyota Sienna 3.5L V6, 6 speed AT @140k never changed transmission oil - is it too late to change or can he still do it ? (save the old oil in case)
it shift very smooth even with a full load going uphill.
I change mine religiously every 40k ('07 Acura MDX, 120k) after I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee AT blow on me at 42k! I know very different quality, or lack thereof...

If the oil is just a bit dark but not burned and gritty it should be safe to do a drain & fill. Yes, save the old fluid just in case. (Don't have the transmission flushed.)
