Hi Scotty. Thank you for being here. My son bought a 2005 BMW 525i frim an auction he has put over 4,000.00 extra into it besides his 3,000.00 price tag. Now a mechanic is telling him it cost 3200.00 to get it in shape.  I cant pry it out of his hands. Is he wasting his money? Is there some kind of collectors value to it?

My view.... if it causing him so many problem and he not hands on.  Get rid of it asap.

Bmw at that age need attention and if a previous owner did not maintain it makes things worst.

Most fix u can do on your own if you have the knowledge but it just space and the amount stuff u have to remove to get to things.  Eg water pump.

Collectable sorry to say no .. it not a limited edition or m or alpina.

If you sons want to look cool and impress his friends but is not car savvy hands on person.. tell him to drive a Toyota for x year and lease a bmw when he can afford it.

My humble view.

Edit I own all the cars scotty says to keep away from .. sucker for pushiment lol

BMW are notorious of causing trouble as they age.

Already if you can fix yourself, parts are pricey and you will need to put some effort. It is a intensive project.

If you can’t fix it yourself and every time you need to go to a mechanic, take the loss and run away! It won’t be the last time (unfortunately).

my humble 2 cents.

I would say get rid of it and get a better vehicle. If he wants a more sporty vehicle you can tell him to get a Honda Civic Si from 2009-2011 or even a Ford Crown Victoria if he wants a RWD vehicle (it also has a v8). You can get Ford Crown Victoria's on the cheaper side that have been well taken care of by older people and then he can spend the money to make the Ford Crown Victoria quicker if you are OK with that. Ford Crown Victoria's can handle quite a bit of abuse without much going wrong. But yes it is a waste of money to keep the BMW.

Paying more than what a car is worth is never a good idea, unless it's the car of his dreams.
