2005 BMW530i or 2006 Jeep Commander?

My wife currently has a 2005 BMW530i with 165k miles (engine probably has around 110k miles) that her dad gave her several years ago (he also manages the maintenance). He recently bought and fixed a 2006 Jeep Commander with 130k miles and has asked if she'd want to trade (it needs a new battery and tires). Any thoughts on this? We live in the Midwest, and an SUV does sound slightly more appealing than the RWD BMW, but not sure if any difference in craftsmanship is worth the "trade". Thanks!

Both are money pits.   Get something better.

I agree, but since we already have the BMW, and the Jeep would be almost free, it "saves money" to stay with these options rather than spend thousands on something else.

If you plan to keep the vehicles for many years and use as a daily, you can expect to spend many thousands more repairing either vehicle.

That is also a good point

Your username is "savemoney".

A Jeep certainly will not save money on fuel.

the BMW isn't amazing either, so it's either stick with the "devil you know" or switch to the Jeep

From the standpoint of reliability and cost of repairs it's like deciding whether you'd prefer facing a firing squad or a hanging.

Lol you're not wrong here

Neither is the optimal choice for low-cost, low maintenance transportation. But if it was me, I'd keep the BMW - it's more comfortable, gets better gas mileage, more fun to drive, no fiddling of registration and insurance, etc.

How long do you plan to keep it? How much money are you ready to spend on it? What are the maintenance costs of BMW?
