The shifter moves from R to N to D without me having to press on the side button. It does not go back to R from N without me pressing the button. But it moves freely between D and N. I had never noticed it until recently. I bought the car at 190,000 about a year and a half ago. It drives just fine. The transmission seems to be fine. Is this normal? Does it need fixing?

yup!
The interlock is mainly there to keep the shifter from being bumped in and out of Park
