Found a One owner 2005 Saturn Ion with 54K miles. Exceptionally clean for $4500. Seems like a decent enough daily driver for work. But the transmission seals were all replaced 10k miles ago? Are these notoriously junky?

I can't answer your question about the seals; however, I really like Saturn Ions.  I have worked on a 2005 and two 2007s.  I find them to be fairly simple to work on thus far. . . with the aid of a handy Haynes manual, Youtube and the internet - including sites like this.

You might want to assess the overall condition of the car.  Then look it up on Kelly Blue Book [KBB.com] for an idea of a 'reasonable' price.

Good luck.

Stay away from that car, because:

1- it is a 15 yeas old discontinued GM product.

2- For the mentioned car, in 40,000 miles, already the transmission seals went out. This tell you a lot about quality of the car.

3- The price is way too high. I might offer $1000 for that car, not anymore.

4- You can find really nice Toyota or Honda cars with that price that last really long time without serious issues.
