How do i fix The check engine light i tried getting a smog and failed because the check engine light is on but wen i looked its not on and it is showing an error code is it a bulb inside the dash that went out ?

Im getting the code P0741 amd it says Torque converter Clutch solenoid circuit performance or stuck off
Once a code is stored it will fail emissions test but the light doesn't have to stay on all the time my advice would be have the code erased using a scan tool and then it's out of the system and drive it a day or two and if the light never comes back on it will probably pass if not you would have to get the code and you would have to repair it there are thousands of code so I can't guess without any information
Is there a way to check the check engine light itself because even wen i turn the key 1 time to where all the lights turn on in the dashboard they all turn on except the check engine light as if its broken
Either the bulb is bad or someone disconnected it. You should take out the gauge cluster to find out.
Have fun getting the cluster out, and back in. While you're in there, it's probably a swell idea to replace all those old (16 years) bulbs. Just a thought.
