shifter gear indicator flashes and engine stalls

HI Scotty,

I have a 2005 Toyota MR2 with 29000 Miles I purchased the Vehicle when I was deployed to Iraq in 2009, the car is always parked in the garage and driven when I come home from deployment, starts the car drove it, and everything seemed normal for a Toyota. I got deployed once again in 2019 and when I came back home (Henderson NV) for R and R  the car will start and idle, but the SMT gear shifter indicator will flash and would not engage once that happens the engine dies, I can start the car and go through the same cycle again and again. Still, on deployment, and once I came home for R&R I Called so many Toyota dealers around me and no one knows how to work or repair the SMT transmission, I called Toyota technical the person that I talked to said someone will get hold of you, and they were supposed to get back with me but they never did. The SMT trans fluid is at $160 for a liter, (I bought three SMT trans fluids)  lots of talk on the internet that blames the SMT transmission for the problem, but not so good solutions. Toyota knows about the SMT transmission problems but never addressed any solutions, or any maintenance. The car is in the shop and they are just replacing parts, and changing the SMT fluid but we are back to square one, the car will idle and the gear will not engage, and the engine dies. Scotty maybe you can help, and find a solution to this problem.

Though my experience has been with the earlier MR2s, perhaps these forums could help you identify the problem/find a good mechanic - there seem to be a lot of posts on SMT issues
