I drive a 2006 Izuzu Ascender 6 cylinder with 145,000 miles. I have been told that the EGR valve is defective. I bought the car brand new in 06. What is an EGR valve and what does it do? Why are they impossible to buy, rent, steal, or other wise procure?
Please help!
The EGR valve is an emission control device that circulates a small portion of exhaust gases back into the intake to lower combustion chamber temperatures and reduce NOX emissions. (Not all vehicles have one, some accomplish essentially the same thing via valve timing.)
Assuming your engine has an EGR valve a dealer should have the part if no one else does though they'll probably want an outrageous amount of money for it.
Most of the time you can remove the valve, clean it out and reinstall it with a new gasket, available everywhere.
