Recent but HUGE fan. Your car philosophy and mine are one in the same.
I picked up a gently used V6 2007 Accord 2 years ago. It is now 13 years old and only 100K original miles. I recently gave it to my 17 year old son who is learning the ropes of owning a car. I had the timing belt changed and other normal maintenance....I am planning on changing the coolant...but should I have the Transmission oil changed as well? If yes...then the whole amount? I remember you have said to be very cautious on changing tranny oil on older cars. Especially if you are not sure it has ever been changed before...Thanks

The oil change interval for transmissions is 50,000 miles. If you KNOW for sure that the service has been performed at the first 50,000 miles you can go ahead and replace it now that its reached 100,000. If you don't know for sure, the general consensus is to drop the transmission pan and do oil and filter without sucking all of the oil out of the transmission (when you drop the pan some oil usually stays in the orifices and between gears). It is true that you should proceed with caution but it can also be a double edge sword at 100,000 miles because the car isnt extremely old yet and there might still be time to get the maintenance up to date. The reality is if people maintained their cars better transmissions probably wouldn't go out other than on very low quality cars.
Agree with Inthedetails. Additionally, one indicator you may want to look at is what the trans fluid looks like right now. If it looks good (color wise), I'd say it's safe and wouldn't hesitate changing the fluid and filter.

I should have been more clear. I do not know if the transmission was ever serviced. But I like the idea of catching up on maintenance....My son could potentially keep this car for awhile. I will definately look at the current fluid and see if I can decide if it looks good color-wise. Thanks for the suggestion.
