I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.7L V6. It has 51,000 miles on it. Should I change the transmission fluid in it or can it be harmful to a vehicle that old?

What does your owner's manual maintenance section say? Personally, I would never let a transmission fluid and filter change go past 40-50K miles.

I would change it with 51,000 miles on the jeep.
You will need a dipstick and a way to measure the fluid temperature. You can find a fill level/temp graph online.
Alternatively, if the transmission is shifting just fine, you can drop the sump pan, change the filter, measure the fluid you took out and replace with the same quantity of ATF+4.
