Hello, I have been watching scotty videos for years thanks for the advice Scotty you are the best. My car is 13 years old with 210K miles and I want to keep it running for another 10 years.
My car is making the dreaded winning noise when I drive, the old mechanic shop that put in new power steering fluid 30K miles ago ... it was dark black and smelled burnt.
I did what Scotty suggested, I used Trans Tune, I drove around 8 or 10 times till it was much red (I used Valvoline ATF Dex 2 / 3) ... the color is very dark red now 3 weeks later. It seems to improve alittle but with the color so dark I think it needs a complete flush. I am going to buy an extractor and suck it all from the system to get it red.
Questions ... Scotty is all hope lost should I replace the power steering pump? Doing so will stop the damage to the rack and pinion rack? Can I use AT-205 at all? The power steering reservoir is dirty inside, should I visit AutoZone and get a basic aftermarket and replace it?
I did change my own alternator if this is as hard or easier please let me know I might attempt to do this myself.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Hi, Scotty or someone ... can I get some advice? My engine is running perfect, no high mileage oil yet, transmission is smooth, steering is the only issue I need this to last 10 years. No rust at all and paint is still very good.
By the time they are making noise it's probably to late. Are you loosing fluid?
Does its WHINE even more when you are idling and turn the sterring wheel back and forth? If its full of fluid and still makes the noise then it sounds like the pump is going.
Hi thanks for replying. I didn't really realize it but it has been making noise for years. 3 years ago I went to a garage to get the power steering fluid flushed, then I just happened to check it 3 weeks ago and it was dark dark black and smelled burnt. I did what Scotty recommended I used a turkey baster, removed fluid, filled with new and did it 10 times or more until it was almost pure red. I just checked last week, fluid is already much dirtier.
No leaking at all, I have no idea what that shop used for fluid but I am using Dex 2 / 3 valv synth atf.
Steering gets hard sometimes to turn, I can't hear anything when I drive.
Yes, I do notice more noise and vibration at idle like it is whining harder or something.
So no lose of fluid, does whine, feel it when in idle and turning sometimes gets hard.
Suggestions?
Thank you
Hi, so I purchased a fluid extractor and took off the inlet hose, put in the extractor, filled up the reservoir and pumped fluid out. I did it 5 or more times, I changed the fluid with a turkey baster a month ago and it was already much darker not a bright red.
The fluid extractor worked great, I also added 2 oz of AT-205 as well.
Turning is buttery smooth now, so I guess it always needed a proper flush.
The pump does make some noise still not as bad but some noise, I assume a bad pump could hurt the rack? How soon should I think about replacing the steering pump?
Can someone let me know, it makes noise but its 98% like butter and don't seem to notice anything out of the ordinary except the noise. I need to keep this 10 more years so if the pump is hurting the rack I would like to fix it now. Thank you
