Hello,
I recently bought an 08 ES350 with ~140k miles. Coming from an 09 Corolla, I am surprised to hear what sounds like knocking when it's cold out. It sounds like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggZOuJWgBPA but not as bad. I can't hear it at idle, but mostly between 1500-2500RPM. From what I've read, the most common conclusion is piston slap as the pistons expand to fill the cylinder walls. Once the engine is warm, the noise is basically gone. The only case I've seen this "problem" has been solved is on an 08 Sienna where the entire short block was replaced under warranty.
It seems that Toyota revised the 2GR-FE around 2010 to prevent this noise, but no one knows what they did. Does anyone have any experience with their own 2GR-FE powered vehicles making this noise and if so were you able to fix it? It doesn't seem to affect performance, but I would like to keep this car as long as I can and the noise is quite disconcerting.
Thanks
Yeah basically you got to live with it you'd have to rebuild the engine to fix it and some of those engines did have that problem
