2009 F150 exhaust leak-like sound under acceleration

Hello Mr. Kilmer,

I thoroughly enjoy your videos!  I'm glad your eye surgery went well (just saw a video, so I'm sorry if that is old news).  What a blessing.

I have a 2009 F150 Lariat 5.4L, automatic ~140K miles, 4WD.  Truck runs fine (from what I can tell, I'm original owner), but I notice what sounds like an exhaust manifold leak (hissing or driving on wet pavement sound) at usually around 30-50MPH, and generally when accelerating.  If I let off the accelerator and reaccelerate it stops.  I do not notice it in colder weather.

I appreciate any suggestions/help you can offer.

Thanks and Blessings,

dr

exhaust leaks sound more ticky. You might be hearing your wheel bearings.

@imperator ok, thanks.  Should I be able to reproduce that if I jack up the truck and rotate the wheels?  I won't be able to get to the RPM when the sound occurs though.

@imperator I'll check it out. Thank you sir!

@imperator I have been told it is a 'congested' catalytic convertor, bad PCV valve, or possibly bad head gasket. Do any of those seem likely to you?

'congested' catalytic convertor
put your hand over the tail pipe and see, but I don't think so. You would feel a lack of power. This can be tested with a pressure gauge on the exhaust.

bad PCV valve
The fact that you hear it while driving suggests no. It would be louder if you open the hood while someone guns the engine in park. Same thing with vacuum leaks.

possibly bad head gasket.
there would be other symptoms. Smoke plumes out the back. Overheating. Loss of coolant etc.
