Scotty, Good morning!!

2009 Toyota Matrix 2.4L, 5 speed, 142k.

Oil light blinks at about 2k into my 3k oil change interval when I brake or turn corners.

No obvious oil leaks under the hood –on the ground …. dry as a bone – no smoke..

I noticed oil looks low on the stick.

Any idea where the oil might be going ???

If I were you and I wanted to keep the car, I'd start to check the oil EVERY time I filled up the gas tank - an easy habit that would prevent running low on oil and roaching the engine. Note that the oil you are burning is being "consumed" by your catalytic converters, and they might fail or clog because of this.

thank you for the quick response!!! love the car(5-speed) and will follow your advice!

Oil burning is an issue on some of the 2.4L I4 2AZ-FE engines including the 2009 Toyota Matrix which Toyota later released a TSB for:

The 2009 Matrix burns oil like crazy, common for the toyotas around the same year but also check around underneath the car for oil leaks

Best thing to do is to try and find the oil that last the longest, I'd recommend Mobil brand or valvoline

No problem! Good luck
