I have a 2009 Subaru Forester that has check engine light on and the cruise control will not work. The local shop states my catalytic converter needs replacement, a new converter will cost 3,500 dollars and that is more than the car is worth. The shop strongly advised against aftermarket parts as Subaru computer will not accept it. Is there another way to repair this. It is a good car, no other issues. Help.

What codes are being reported? Sometimes the problem is with O2 sensors or even exhaust leaks rather than the catalyst.

Assuming it is the cat. Cat prices have doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled in the last four years.
