- I bought a 2009 Toyota matrix and it's only getting about 17 miles per gallon. It's an Automatic transmission, with 171k miles. It runs fine, but there's a vibration when it's in drive with the brake pressed that stops when I put it in neutral. What could be causing the bad gas mileage?

Wow! My 07 matrix gets 37 mi a gallon on the highway. If it runs okay but gets it horrible gas mileage odds are your torque converters bad on the transmission because when you put it in gear, if it starts shaking a bunch, that means often. The torque converter has too much drag on it which reduces efficiency of the transmission and it will give you horrible gas mouth. But of course also check the mass air flow sensor. If it's bad it gets wrong dad and you can get bad gas mileage

Like Scotty said, I would do the simple stuff and see if that helps at all. Clean MAF, throttle body, replace air filters, run some cleaner through the gas for the injectors. Hope for the best!
