2009 Toyota Yaris P0012 Timing over retarded

Scotty,

I have always watched your videos and they are very informative. I recently bought a 09 Toyota Yaris and I got a code P0012. I change the position timing sensor and erase the code hoping that it solves the problem, but didn't. I went to the dealership and they told me that it was going to be a 3K job because it had to do something with the timing belt. can I get some advice on what I should do next before I pay 3k?

Sincerely,

Stay away from dealers and chain shops. (That car doesn't even have a timing belt, it has a chain per the rockauto.com database. There's a reason for the nickname "stealerships".)

If home remedies don't work take the car to a good independent mechanic for diagnosis.

I watch this video when i replace the sensor and I still have the check engine light with the same code.

Maybe the car was not maintained properly and the timing chain is worn or there may be some other problem. As I said, if home remedies have been exhausted it's time to take it to a good mechanic who can do a proper diagnosis.

Change out the oil control valve solenoid -

Dirty engine oil is the main cause of this problem.  Change it and the filter every 5000 miles or once a year.
