Hi Scotty,

I know this is not a car question but mostly a motorcycle question. I recently purchased a 2009 Yamaha v star 650 classic with 8,552 miles on it. Reading the owners manual it’s asking to put 10w-30 engine oil on it but the guy that sold it to me  has been using 10w-40 Castrol power 1 4T full Synthetic oil is there no problem using that every oil change? And also for the gear oil he has been using 75w-90 Lucas gear oil and the manual is asking 80w-90, is it fine to use 75w-90 on it?

and one more thing any advice in how to maintain it to last me a long time?

thanks for you help!!

Any reason why the previous owner used different oil viscosities? I would stick to the manufacturer's recommendation for oil viscosity.

What I’m thinking is he put 10w40 instead of 10w30 because i live in Oklahoma and right now it’s like almost 100 degrees during the day and for the gear oil I don’t know why but I just changed the engine oil to 10w30 and the gear oil to 80w90 to keep it how it told me in the manual

Thanks for your help!!
