Hey Scotty! I recently bought 2010 Acura TL FWD 3.5L V6 for my son. It requires premium fuel. Why? My 2012 Toyota Highlander SE V6 and my daughter's 2011 Toyota Camry Se run fine on regular unleaded. I told my son to alternate between regular and mid fuel for now.
If you really want to be smart, use ethanol free fuel. Thats what they use in japan.
It burns cleaner, not as hot, and doesn't clog your fuel system.

Perhaps it has a higher compression ratio or more advanced ignition timing that the Highlander, requiring a higher octane fuel to prevent ping and engine damage.
