Picking the car up in Illinois and driving it home to SC (640 miles). Other than the oil, what should I have replaced before I drive it home & have my mechanic go over it thoroughly?

Normally, when you buy cars that have less than 10k miles, you really wouldn't need to replace much. Did you check the coolant? Also, how much did you spend on this car?

@kp I would agree with the fluids being less than 10k miles, but wouldn't they degrade in the last 14 years? I am having the oil & coolant changed no matter what. I got the car for under $25k.

Fluids will degrade overtime. When I first saw your question, I thought at first you meant by what needed to be replaced in terms of parts (battery, alternator, etc.)

@kp Would you recommend all fluids be replaced?

Yes.

@kp I assumed. Thanks

@kesterpaul62 You mentioned battery, that is for sure one that will either have been replaced, or be on it's last leg. I would think it is at least on it's second battery by now, and it would be fairly old too.

If you are planning to fly there, and pick it up and drive it home, might be worth buying a few things once you get the car in illinois.

I would suggest the $40 harbor freight tool kit. It has all the basic tools you may need. It is the PITTSBURGH Tool Set with Case, 130 Piece. When I was traveling a lot, this was the one little tool kit I would take with me, just a good assortment of tools. The price makes it a no-brainer to have in my cars.

Also, having a jump pack might not be a bad idea, as was mentioned the questionable battery. A good flashlight may not be a bad idea, in case something happens at night, or happens in the day, that extends to night.

If the original tires are on there, I would replace them before driving it home.

@oldandy Good point, I would hope they had been replaced by then, but you never know.

If they can prove that's that type of miles then go for it because they normally have too much miles.
