2010 Outback exhaust smell

My wife's 2010 Outback 4 cylinder wagon has 121,000 miles. When the heat/AC is set to take in outside air there is a very strong exhaust smell inside the car while stopped or idling. It goes away when it's on recirculate. The dealer and another mechanic with a smoke machine couldn't find an exhaust leak anywhere.

Are you sure it's not an oil smell? Could be a valve cover gasket dripping on the exhaust. (You'd think the dealer would catch that but you can't really count on them being on top of things.) Also, that car was made towards the very end of Subaru's head gasket problems and would tend to leak externally at first.

It's definitely exhaust. Not gas or oil.
