I'm looking into buying a manual 2010 Subaru Forester with 128k miles (asking price $2500). The car knocks in idle... what worst case scenario could this be besides the oil, knock sensor, or spark plug, and how could this be diagnosed.

Stay away from any car with a knocking engine. Also, Subaru engines of that vintage are prone to head gasket failure which costs thousands of $$$ to repair.

A bad rod or main bearing, necessitating an engine rebuild.

TBH, that sounds to good to be true for the price in this market. There must be something wrong with it. If it does check out, it’s a steal. But if it doesn’t, it’s a money pit.

Unless you want to pay a real mechanic for a real inspection I’d move on. Might not be serious, but probably is.
