Is the 2011-2014 mustang 3.7 v6 auto transmission reliable? Are they good sports cars or is the 5.0 the way to go?

Yes, the 3.7L V6 with the auto is fine. Just stay away from the manual transmissions.
If you want a 5.0L V8, I suggest sticking with the 2011-2014 models and not getting towards the newer Mustangs. Those have a lot of problems.
