Hello Scotty,
my partner has a 2011 Ford Focus se automatic with 114,000 miles on it and I noticed that it never really gets up to “temperature” even at highway speeds unless it’s sitting still. (Stays on cold looking at the temperature gauge) not sure what’s causing it and could it mechanically total the car?

It is probably the temperature sending unit. Sometimes they can be cleaned and reinstalled and sometimes they need to be replaced. It's on top of the valve cover between cylinders 2 and 3. Makes sure the electrical connector is clean and tight. AutoZone - Duralast #SU10467 - $31.99.
