Hello. I am looking at two cars for my 20 year son. The first is a 2011 Toyota Corolla S with 91k on the 1.8L motor. The other is a 2015 Hyuandai Elantra with 85k on the 1.8L.
Both cars are in great shape, just looking for a used car to get my son through his remaining college years, and hopefully beyond. Which would you recommend.
Thank you in advance for the advice.

Just wanted to provide a quick update: My son and I bought the Corolla (I wanted him to have some skin in the game), and so far, so good. One small bump in the road with an out of the blue dead battery two days after brining the car home, but the dealer took care of us and replaced the battery.
Thank you for the advice. Take care, stay safe, and happy motoring.
David
Glad to hear it worked out!
Great! Hope you enjoy your Corolla ownership!
Now it depends on whether you like your son or not. If you do like your son and want to get him a car that is reliable, then get the Corolla. If you want something where the engine blows up every 50k miles, get the Hyundai. Simple as that. FYI carcomplaints gave that car a "Beware of Clunker" award back in 2013 because of it's engine problems. The 2015 is better but don't expect more than 100k out of that car. I would go Corolla by far especially for a first car. I would also consider a 2013 Honda Civic.
Thank you for the advice.
Corolla S and never look back! Hyundais are generally not as good beyond 100K miles and that Elantra is already at 85K.
Thank you for the advice.
Uh, Chevrolet Cavalier that if your son wrecks it, you be out only $10 or $15, Dad.
I’m joking. Instead of buying him a used car. How about giving your son your car and buying yourself a new car
Good idea but really depends on the car he has himself. What car do you own Daveh370?
This will actually be my son's second car. His first car, a 2007 Kia Spectra, was inherited from a deceased family member. The Spectra needs work and I do not feel like sinking any more money into it (mine, or his). My son will be contributing about half of the money for a new-to-him car. (Knocking on wood) My son has not caused any of the issues with the Spectra; these issues were caused by neglect by the previous owner/family member.
I just bought a brand new F-150 Lariat FX4 in June, and am very happy with my truck. Not getting rid of it for a while.
Ok then I would go with the Corolla if you like it and he likes it just get that because realize the Elantra is the same car as the Spectra/Forte they are just rebadged.
Great.
Thank you for the advice.
- I am glad you hear that you got the Corolla, definitely the better choice.
