Scotty,
I love your channel. Tons of good info. I just purchased a 2012 Elantra for $750 with 200k miles on it. From all visual inspection no issues. One headlight intermittently working which I think could be the ground as well as one tail light. Small noise from the front driver side suspension which I think could be a sway bar link or bushing. I just have to inspect. I bought the car primarily to be a commuter car in which I put approx 30k miles a year. It was my brother in laws car and he kept up on all regular maintenance of the car. What maintenance do you recommend I do to it before I start driving it? Spark plugs fluids etc. Took for a test drive for about 15 mins on highway around 75mph and drove smooth with no issues whatsoever. If I get a year out of the car I think I won. Thank you for any help.
That’s a great deal for $750, I must admit.
I’d follow the service schedule in your owner’s manual & pray the engine & transmission lasts a year, with your intended use case.
Do not put more money into the car, other than what’s urgently required to continue driving safely, since it’s already on borrowed time.
Good luck!
Would you recommend I change transmission fluid?
Have a read through this for specific guidance regarding changing ATF - https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/qa/atf/
To be honest, I don't think you can put that kind of mileage on it.
Do you think the OP can get 1 year out of it which is his goal?
I don’t know.
What does the ATF look like?
Would you recommend that I change transmission fluid?
When was it last changed? What does the fluid look like? Is if shifting fine?
Not sure the last time it was changed. When I drove it it shifted smooth no issues. Just thinking of starting fresh with a majority of fluids. Oil change was just done. What do you think?
