2012 Subaru Forest burning oil

Hi Scotty,

I have around 117k miles on a 2012 Subaru Forester non-turbo model. I was given a warning by the dealership that it might start to burn oil around 75k miles which is of course after their 60k warranty. I burn about half to 1 quart for every 7000 miles. I have read that moving to a higher weight oil helps with the leaks. Should I move from Ow-20 to a 5W-20 / 5W-30 oil?

That's not bad oil consumption. Many Hyundai owners would give their right arm to only be consuming 1/2 to 1 quart every 7000 miles. You don't even need to top up between 5000 mile changes. Just live with it, stick with manufacturer-recommended oil, and periodically check the oil level.

That's not much oil consumption at all. Kia/Hyundai owners would be worshipping you. Their engines are so badly made, 1,000 miles per quart is "normal". It's not normal. If the OEM PCV valve is still the same, you might consider buying another OEM one. Inevitably, some oil is always going to be burned. The piston rings don't make a perfect seal. You get blow-by, which along with oil residue gets recirculated back into the engine to be burned.

You might consider shortening your oil change interval to every 5,000 miles.
