Pushed in the parking brake pedal & the cable snapped.
Is the parking brake actually engaged or not because the cable broke and is slack.
The brake light is on. But does that mean the brake is engaged?

The cable is slack but the brake indicator light remains on because the switch has nothing to push it in to go off.
But to be absolutely sure drive the car slowly and see if drives normaly without any kind of resistance. Also check below your vehicle to see if any of the cable has become so relaxed that it is hanging lower than usual just in case. if it has you might have to affix it so that nothing will catch and cause more problems on top of what you have now.
to turn off the light, pull up on the parking brake pedal, and push the release at same time , until the pedal retracts back to it's fully released position. If it doesn't stay there, you may need to jam it with something.
