Hi Scotty,
I'm considering a used Lexus LS460 from model years 2013-2017, between 50k-90k miles. What things should I be looking out for when buying the car and what should I expect in terms of future maintenance?
The problem I have with the LS460 is it has a V8 engine and eventually it will need the starter and knock sensor replaced, but due to its location the intake manifold will have to come off and there is not much room to work back there - anyhow, if a shop does it it will easily cost several thousand dollars for the job (>$3,000). Also, if it has air suspension those can leak over time and also very expensive to fix. Finally, they are gas hogs so you will spend more on fuel. Being an LS it will have more bells and whistles than a GS, ES, and IS and so some of those electronics could fail over time (which is more cost if you wanted to fix).
A couple years ago I looked into getting an LS460 (similar years as you) and decided against it due to all the costs above. I ended looking at the 2016-2019 Lexus GS350 instead.
Maintenance will cost $$$$, same with repairs. You might want to look into a Toyota Avalon or Lexus ES as well.
They're reliable luxury cars, but watch out for maintenance and repairs as they'll cost a premium to maintain cause it's a luxury car and especially one that's rear wheel drive. Do you plan on daily driving that vehicle? If you're okay with the maintenance, they can be good luxury cars. Before purchase, always make sure a trusty mechanic checks it out and you're set.
