Shift linkage problem after engine replacement

I have 2013 chevy Cruze that overheated with 90,000miles. Engine locked up so I dropped a used one in it. upon pulling the old engine the gear shifter cable was left and part of the keepers on the cable broke resulting in the purchase of a new gear shifter cable. I got the new engine in runs great however....traditionally the gear selector and the instrument cluster correspond and should be 4 positions, park then reverse then neutral, then drive. This is what happens when I move the gear selector on my car the instrument cluster reads park then neutral move the gear selector one click nothing happens on the cluster move it to the final position it reads drive. When I reverse the order it reads drive, stays on drive, stays on drive again, then neutral, then reverse. im certain I ordered the right part. Sorry if this is confusing please ask as many clarifying questions as you need.

Well it seems to me that something's bent you put a new cable in correctly. The only thing they can go wrong would be where it's connected. It's bent so it doesn't read right
