2006 Subaru legacy

Scotty, my grandsons first car a 2006 legacy is giving check engine of running lean and has dashboard alerts for air bag and dsl. It starts right away most of the time, but some times takes several times to start. Could this be the fuel filter and where is it located if need to replace.

Thanks, grandma

What are the actual codes? What do fuel trims look like?

There are many things that can go wrong with a 17-year-old car, and a clogged fuel filter could be one of them. Other problem areas could be vacuum leaks, weak fuel pump, clogged fuel injectors, or sensor problems. Also note Subarus of that vintage are very prone to blowing head gaskets so if they are original that's something to keep an eye on. If the timing belt is original it is overdue for replacement and that is an interference engine. (Subaru recommends replacing the timing belt every 105K miles or 105 months, whichever comes first.)

A search indicates that the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank.
