Hi Scotty!

Long time follower and fan 🙂

I have a 2013 Toyota Prius with 200k miles.  I took it to the Toyota Dealer by my house (I usually take it to the dealer by my work, this was my first experince with this Toyota Sevice Dept).  Ran into some issues that you can read my email to the dealer below.

I attached pictures to the email but can't figure out where to attach them to this thread.

Is there any advice you can give me to help?

Hi,

Our 2013 Prius was taken to your Service Dept Dec 21 for an Oil Change (please see attached invoice).

A couple of issues.

1. the car felt off (slight shake and vibration) the night I picked it up (530pm).  I also noticed that the car was still in service mode when I picked it up.
2. the next morning when I tried to drive it the car prompted me 'to pull over to safe spot and check the hybrid system' with a check engine light and yellow triangle with exclamation point warning lights on.  The car was noticeably shaky.
3. we contacted the service team and the gentleman stated it could be a variety of things to bring it in,
4. we did not feel comfortable driving the car and instead connected it to a computer and received a P3190 code.
5. A lot of items can cause the code, one of them included excess oil levels.  I checked the oil today and found that oil was way above the max marker, double the amount indicated.  In addition there was fresh oil all around the valve cover. and other parts of the engine.
6. the coolant level was well below the minimum level even though the invoice stated that 'all fluid levels were topped off'.
7. a scratch in the fender was noticed that was not there before.

When we called the service team the representative said that anything they did during the oil change to cause the issue is unlikely and that given the miles it could be alot of other other things.  He did mention there are cameras in the garage they could pull the video and take a look at the service to verify.

I'd like for that to happen and get a phone call to discuss this matter right away.

Thank you,

This kind of thing is one of the reasons we advise people to stay away from dealerships. You might want to have the car examined by a good independent mechanic (not a chain shop).

I’m not so sure improper oil levels would directly cause this code.

If there was oil spilled into the throttle body or the mass air flow sensor. Maybe. But that is highly unlikely unless they are completely incompetent.

it could be related to the oil change, it could also be just dumb coincidence.

Regardless, some simple things to try is to clean the throttle body and clean the maf sensor. Auto parts stores or Walmart  usually sell a combo spray kit, one spray to clean the throttle body and one spray to clean the MAF Sensor.

I have a 2004 Prius. I wish I remembered the exact code I got. It could have been P3190, but I can’t remember. When I did get the code, I did just that, I cleaned the throttle body and the MAF sensor. And viola, problem fixed. All for less than $20 bucks for spray and a little elbow grease.
