Hi Scotty love your videos. I have a 2013 Subaru Impreza base model sedan. I recently came to notice that it burns oil and I tried changing oil more frequently at 3,000 miles but it was still burning a little oil. I added 1qt of Heavy Duty Lucas Oil Stabilizer to my oil changes. Will this harm the engine in the long run? Is it okay if I can switch back to my full synthetic oil changes with 0w-20 and change it more frequently?
How much oil does it use? That car is in the range of model years where Subaru had oil burning problems.
It takes 5.1qts total. I put 4.1qts of full synthetic 0w20 & 1qt of Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer
But how much is it burning? How long to go through a quart?
I believe a little above 1qt every 1k miles or so
It's probably not feasible to fix it since that would involve rebuilding the engine. I would just live with adding oil as needed.. You could try replacing the PCV valve if that has not already been done, may help a little.
Thanks Chuck appreciate it. In your opinion do you think I should just stick with the normal 0w20 full synthetic or should I add Lucas oil stabilizer to it? And is it okay to switch back to normal full synthetic after running Lucas with the oil previously for about a thousand miles?
The problem with additives like Lucas is they might affect the variable valve timing system in your engine. (It would be OK in an older engine that does not have that feature.) Same with using heavier oil. Best to stick with the oil specified by the manufacturer.
Got it, you think it’ll be okay if I stop using lucas? Like do you think the seals maybe have gotten swollen from lucas and it may leak if I stop using it now? I only started using lucas about 900 miles ago.
You'll be fine going back to just straight oil, though since you have already been using Lucas for nearly 1K miles has it made any difference?
