Hello, my mother currently owns a 2013 Volvo S60 w the 2.5L Volvo modular five cylinder engine turbocharged currently has 136k on the odometer. Car runs and drives fine except the car uses about a qt every few weeks or less and when myself or a mechanic check the dipstick it is frequently dry as a bone and there have also been times where my mother has been driving and the oil pressure light comes on. Volvo has said that there exists a piston ring defect in these engines which is what causes these engines to burn so much oil. Would it be worth rebuilding the engine or finding a junkyard motor with low enough mileage? She will be using the car to drive to and from work each day which is about 70 miles of driving a day.
You should get a quote to see how much it will cost to rebuild the engine. I would go to a professional mechanic or dealer to do the job, since it has to be done very well and not so many people know how to do that. I suggested dealer too since they can give you a better warranty on the job they do although they charge you a lot more.
The other thing is that, after you getting the quote, you most likely go to a junk yard to find a used engine or junk the car.
my last suggestion is to put quarter oil cans in the trunk and after determining how much oil it burns, ask your mother to top off the oil.
Your PVC system could be clogged cause high internal engine pressure. I would check that out.
