Will washing underside of car in winter cause rust?

182000 miles

i rising  winter when snow ,  wash botton   in winter.

 

 

will this start rust  all over the place  to the botton   unitbody? botton?    live in NJ

Washing the car in the winter is a good idea. Especially the undercarriage. It will wash away the road salt.

The rust in the picture isn't 'surface rust'. The rust shown in the picture will worsen in those areas. Rinsing the car off will help prevent other areas from rusting. Unfortunately, once rust gets a foothold in a particular area(s) as shown in your photo it will continue to worsen in that area and there's little you can do unless you're willing to R&R the rusted metal.


in this case, it might actually be surface rust. You can see the paint was compromised in a collision . But you're right that fenders often go first because of all the junk kicked up by the tires.


@mmj whoever touched up that paint.. not so great. I would likely grind those areas down, I'd get rid of it. Yeah, looking underneath might not be for the faint of heart.

I was being sarcastic. (lack of touch up after accident) That rust just looks pretty deep to me. But I'm not on the ground in NJ examining it so I can't know
