We made a big mistake and bought, the Jeep Patriot latitude 2014 with 145000 miles. Should we try and trade it in, take a loss and get the Rx 350 Lexus 2008-2009
I think if we keep it we will get wacked.

Get rid of it as quickly as you can.
Sell it yourself. You will get more money.
See what the popular dumping ground for bad cars, Carmax, will quote you for it and judge whether it's feasible to beat that with a private sale, figuring in the hassles of dealing with the motley assortment of grifters and scammers that those tend to attract.
Chuck is right! I worked at Carmax years ago in between jobs and for 30 minutes of your time see what they will give ya! I aways found at the time they were close to Edmunds "Fair condition" trade-in. You can get more on your own for sure. You would be amazed at what Carmax would buy.....ANYTHING!
At 145,000 miles already and out of warranty, I would definitely sell it and get into a better vehicle (Toyota or Lexus if you can).
