Does any of the info you provide about car engines apply to a atkinson engine? I've followed your general advice about regular maintenance and, so far, haven't had any issues (bearing in mind I bought it new and I've only put 42,000 miles on the vehicle.) Also, these cars are known for touchy brakes; will that have any effect on putting bigger brakes on it.

Atkinson cycle engines are not that much different from Otto cycle engines. Same advice applies.
Leave the brakes alone.
