2015 Subaru Crosstrek XV Manual Transmission (5 spd) Downshifting Issues

Hi Scotty,

I am a big fan of your YouTube channel. I live in Toronto and like you, I also attended York University.

I own a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek XV manual transmission with approx. 110,000 km. I recently had the transmission fluid and rear differential fluid changed; my mechanic drained the fluid and simply refilled the transmission and rear differential with the same amount that he drained. My mechanic used the fluid that he obtained from the Subaru dealer. THE ISSUE: The transmission up-shifts very smoothly; however, sometimes when gearing down from 5th gear to 4th gear at highway speeds, it does not want to go into gear, almost as if the the 4th (and sometimes 3rd gear) was "closed" or "blocked" or "mis-aligned." This issue started almost immediately after the fluid change. When this happens, if I move the gear shifter around while keeping the clutch depressed. I can put it back into 5th gear, third gear or 4th gear. Because of this issue, I need to very intentionally and somewhat more forcibly down downshift from 5th gear to 4th gear; most of the times, this seems to allow me to downshift from 5th to 4th.

My mechanic (a close friend with 25 years of experience) and I can't seem to figure out what the issue may be. Please help.

Thank you Scotty,

Jin

Sounds like the linkage may be a bit out of adjustment or has worn bushings.

Usually this is just a linkage lubricant issue. Have your mechanic lube your shifter linkage.

Well the weak points of all Subarus are there transmissions and unfortunately since he changed the fluid and put the correct fluid and it started doing it that could have caused it sometimes those things in supers are just so temperamental I have seen that happen before

I think Scotty mixed it up with an automatic transmission, anyways bump for more answers.

Hi Scotty, can you please confirm if your response is for a manual transmission?

Was the fluid which the dealer provided, the same spec as what’s mentioned in your owner’s manual?

fluid was purchased from the dealer

I have the same issue with my 2015 Subaru XV 5 speed manual.  I cannot shift from 5th to 4th without double clutching, and when I do I hear a thunk and then can shift.

Has anyone determined the root cause of this issue or how to fix it?

@jwjaw923 You are responding to a post from 4 years ago. The author has not been active here since that time. Rather than "hijacking" an old post, please post your own topic describing the complete details of your car, the problem you are experiencing, and what diagnostic steps have been taken so far. Thank you.
