2016 Jeep Grande Cherokee Laredo at 180000 miles. Started making ticking noises. Is leaking oil. Changed oil and ticking noises stopped and started again after a couple days. Where is the noise coming from?

Where is the noise coming from?

You did not state what engine you have but it appears that all of those came with the 3.6L Pentastar V6. The noise may well be be the dreaded Pentastar engine tick due to rocker arm failure or wear in other parts of the valvetrain.

However we can't tell for certain from here. If you upload a video to youtube that demonstrates the noise and post a link to it here that might help. Or, you can use a mechanic's stethoscope to try zeroing in on the source of the noise.

I don't like the sound of that at all. On an old pushrod engine I'd say it was likely worn or stuck lifters causing a valve tap. Those old engines were not terribly sensitive and could run for years that way.

However although the cause is similar on the Pentastar, there it is indicative of a serious problem developing. You really need to have a good mechanic check it out. (Look for a good independent mechanic. Avoid dealers and chain shops .)
