Can't easily engage 5th gear

Hey man, quick question — I’ve got a 2016 Lancer ES manual and I’m trying to see if something I’m experiencing is normal or not.

When I’m stopped, I can’t shift into 5th unless I rev it a bit or go into another gear first. Everything works fine with the engine off though.

Have you ever noticed anything like that?

Sounds like you have have a worn-out synchronizer on that gear. (If your clutch were not releasing fully I would expect you'd have trouble shifting into all gears.)

I'm no expert on manual transmissions, but shifting from a stop straight to 5th doesn't sound normal.

When I’m stopped, (emphasis added)

Didn't catch that part the first time through - as @imperator says that's not the way one would normally drive, you'd stall the engine out starting off in 5th gear. Having said that, I wouldn't think there would be a problem selecting top gear from a stop but I don't think I've ever tried it on any of the manual trans cars I've owned - there was never a reason to do so.

It looks like that car has a cable-operated shift linkage. It's possible something is a bit out of adjustment bit if there is no problem with normal driving I wouldn't worry about it.
