I have a friend who owns a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander with the 2.4 engine. The AC stopped working over winter so she added refrigerant thinking it would fix it because it has done this in the past and adding refrigerant fixed it. It didn't so she took it to the dealer. They said it was the AC compressor. Could this be?

Do not take it to a dealer. Take it to an automotive AC specialist for correct diagnosis and repair.

A manifold gauge set will tell you if the compressor is developing sufficient pressure. However if you are not familiar with working on air conditioning it's best to take it to a good AC specialist. (NOT a dealer and NOT a chain shop like Firestone, Midas, or Pep Boys.)
