scotty just purchased 2014 4runner limited with 98000 miles . i also have a 2004 4runner with 260000 miles.
my question is the 2014 has more drive line noise than the 2004. the 2017 has all wheel drive where the 2004 is 4wd.
could the all wheel drive have more noise?
Clarification: The 4runner has always been offered with 4WD but not AWD. It’s body on frame chassis with traditional 4WD system. There is a difference between those 2 systems.
All 4Runners come with 4WD so you can pick when you want to put it in 4-wheel-drive mode or leave it in 2-wheel-drive. Is the noise coming from the engine or from underneath the car?
That’s not entirely true. Some 4Runners come in 2WD only. 🙂
sound underneath..the 2004 4runner has no driveline noise....
the all wheel drive does
Oh true @Satter lol, I meant to say all the 4WD ones allow you to chose between 2WD and AWD - they're not full time 4WD.
2015 4 runner limited is 4 time 4wheel with option for 4 wheel lock.
sr5 is not
full time 4wd
Sorry, I apologize for the confusion. I meant to say that 4Runners that are equipped with 4WD are not AWD because you can pick between staying in 2WD or switching to 4WD. On AWD cars, you cannot switch back and forth. Hope this clears it up!
@scottj - Did your mechanic say that 4Runner is in good shape? It's normal for a little driveline noise when switching back and forth between 2WD and 4WD.
The newer ones make noise like that Scotty has many videos on them.
