why did my speedometer fail

Hi Scotty - love your stuff. Like a fool I bought new in 2017 but took out 7 year warranty. Satnav unit went out in Aug - then (after dealer front pads change) one of the abs sensors went bad (coincidence?). Still waiting for parts - live in Portugal - from the UK!! Now the Speedo's gone out - likely to be related to the abs wheel sensor? What junk! Shld have bought a used Toyota. Will the bad abs sensor damage the ECU if the wife continues to drive it without it - we'll use portable GPS for speed meanwhile...? PS warn any US folk to expect slooow incommunicative service if they come to Portugal - even worse than the UK!! Running an obd2 check of my own on it tomorrow - modern junk - never again! My 2000 Saab still going strong after (another) Dic change...

Thanks

Andy

The DIC ("Direct Ignition Cassette") is a non-serviceable wear item on Trionic-equipped Saabs. Be sure to use only OEM DICs - the aftermarket knockoffs are terrible and short-lived.

Also be sure to use the correct type for your car. A 2000 model would be a T7 system that uses the black cassette. Always use the correct factory-specified spark plugs gapped to specification and changed at the recommended intervals, and use dielectric grease when installing the DIC. With proper care the OEM DIC can last a long time. (Mine is still going strong after more than 10 years and it was used when I bought it.)

What car?

You need to connect a simple OBD2 scanner and see if the car is registering vehicle speed.

If "vehicle speed" remains 0, than you need to connect to a full systems scanner and investigate.

abs sensors went bad (coincidence?)

A wheel speed sensor? if so then yes, that's how your car determines speed.

Luckily wheel speed sensors usually cost pretty much nothing.

Will the bad abs sensor damage the ECU

Unlikely, but it's best to replace the sensor!

modern junk

Well, so far the issues don't seem out of the ordinary.

And most 2000s European cars were defiantly worse than than most 2010s cars.

2000 Saab still going strong

Well the 2000s if when SAABs saw quality issues pop-up.

The 2000 9-3 was built by GM and shared a lot of parts and design with the Opel Vectra / Saturn LS with a Swedish engine.

It's definitely no Toyota.

Shld have bought a used Toyota

It's important to state that European Toyotas often have different and more troublesome powertrains

(some have turbocharged engines (Auris), some have weak CVTs (Avensis petrol), etc...)

Yeah those are complex systems but if you speedometer doesn't work. Hey, I don't know what it's like there but here in the States you can use your phone and it'll show you the speed. You can use that as a speedometer
