Hi Scotty,
I have a 2017 mazda cx5 awd with 26k miles. I had the brakes and rotors replaced at 20k miles after they warped, pitted and rusted from not being driven weekly in upstate New York. My mechanic used duralast brake rotors 77105DL and duralast ceramic brake pads D1623. I am not very aggressive on the brakes, and my morning commute is 8 miles one way with 70% of that being at 55 mph or higher. I have never had this issue with any other vehicles from my trucks, suvs, or cars. Is it truly just that they are making them this cheap? Did I buy just a bad brand? Is it the winters in NY and the massive amounts of salt just destroying them? At 500 bucks a shot to replace them, I was debating on just trading the SUV in and getting a FWD 22 Toyota Corolla if this is just going to keep happening. Thank you
A lot depends on who did the work and how it was done. Hereafter, I would suggest getting parts with a limited lifetime warranty if you don't have it already. A lot of times, shops will replace the wheels and tighten the lug nuts using an impact gun for speed and get you out the door. The correct way to do this is with a torque wrench set to the manufacturer's spec torque and tighten the nuts in a criss cross pattern evenly so as not to distort and warp the rotors. This might be the problem. Good luck.
Thank you very much for the quick reply. I don't think the shop did that, my dad has been going there for years and they take their work trucks there as well. Never any issues. I didn't know if this might just be a mazda issue (this is my first one). The same shop did my moms brakes in her 2012 impala and she has not had any issues and its been 3 years. I think if these end up getting too bad I will try OEM ones again and hope that fixes it. Thank you
what makes you think that your rotors are warped?
There is a little pulsing on the pedal when I apply the brakes. It is not bad right now, I plan on leaving them alone but I am curious if it is just a mazda issue or not? If it is ill just sell it while I can get good money for it. I never had this issue on my corolla and my wifes highlander which gets driven 5k miles a year has not had this issue yet either. My trucks in the past never had any brake work done until well after 50k miles, so im not sure what the issue would be other than salt/sand and it sitting most weekends when we take my wifes car.
I would still get a torque wrench and check the lug nuts, just for quality. Somebody at the shop may have been in a hurry and just used an impact wrench on them.
I went back to the shop after I drove 100 miles so he could recheck the torque. He did the same thing when he did the mounting and balancing on my old trucks new tires and rims. He said with alloy wheels he likes to double check between 60-100 miles of driving to make sure they did not become loose. I will call tomorrow and ask him for sure though. Since mine has alloy wheels I would think the torque setting is around 100 but I will look to verify tonight.
Something else is going on . I have a cx5 and haven't had a problem with the rotors.
