2017 Mustang Console Buttons Inop After Battery Cable Removal

Hi Scotty,

My son has a 2017 Mustang 5.0 GT. This car has the radio and AC controls on a center console (not touch panel driven). The center console AC, Radio and other buttons (steering, traction control, ...) no longer light up or work after installing an "underglow light system" which included removing the battery cables.  We can control the radio from the steering wheel but not the console buttons.  The AC and other functions don't have a secondary set of controls so we are stuck there.  I couldn't find a bad fuse but there are a lot to sift through for sure...  We didn't use a power hold up device (found out that is a good idea later on from one of your videos).  What are your thoughts? Will a reprogram at the dealer work or do we likely have to replace the entire front console assy? I'm guessing that is where they house the controller for the buttons.

Thanks,

Andy59

remove the stupid lights and see if that fixes the problem ffs

Tried that first. It didn't.

1. Take off the lights

2. See if the problem is resolved. If yes, go to #3. If no, go to #4.

3. Lesson: under glow lights do not go on muscle cars. They do not like them and will act up until you remove them

4. Did you try to wire the toggle switch for the lights by splicing into the factory wiring harness? If yes, go to #5. If no, go to #6.

5. You have accidentally sliced a power wire for the console. All it takes is a small cut and it will not work. You'll need to have a professional rewire your console, which will be $$$$. Lesson: under glow lights do not go on muscle cars.

6. Did you splice the kit into the ignition system? If so, you've got a party on your hands now. Lesson: STOP PUTTING GLOW LIGHTS ON MUSCLE CARS. *ahem*

In the event that removing the kit does not solve the problem, you've got a cut line or bad fuse somewhere and, as you said, on modern cars there is a ton to go through.

Good luck with it. I've fixed A LOT of cars that have had issues after installing those. It is a real headache.

I didn't have to cut anything. There was a positive post i could just add the eyelets to. Taking them off didn't help. I'm thinking the on/off f the battery cables fried the bezel module for the center console. I have seen a few posts saying they've seen that. Thanks for the tip. I might be visiting the dealership to see if they can reprogram it or if the bezel has to be replaced.

Well at least you didn't damage the wiring. That's good. Most of those kits call for cutting into the wiring harness which is why I mentioned it. It would be a freak accident if that fried the console. But I have seen stranger. Curious to know what you find out.

Too late now.  It wasn't disconnecting the battery that screwed up you system, it was installing "under glow lights" for some strange reason.
