Hi Scotty,
we have a 2017 Toyota RAV4. Well cared for, and we expected to drive it for two or 300,000 K. I do all of my own maintenance, and I noticed some oil spotting during the last three oil changes, and I have now confirmed with another mechanic that the rear main seal is leaking. At 60 K, this is ridiculously disappointing for a Toyota. I have tried your AT205 recommendation for the last two oil changes, and it has slowed down, but I’m still getting driveway spots every night. at the moment I have upgraded the weight from 0W to 5W to try to slow down the leak. I really need some recommendations about how to reach out to Toyota, because this is a $3000 labor charge on a $25 part. Obviously, the vehicle is just out of warranty. And everybody knows that a Toyota rear main seal should never go bad for the life of the car if it’s well-maintained. Please help.
I buy nothing but toyota or lexus, and nearly all of them had a leaking rear main seal.
It was never enough to notice a drop in oil, but it was certainly there when looking under it. My 98 4runner I would wipe it off now and then or I could smell it a bit. I live in the rust belt, so I just consider it extra rust protection.
The cost to fix them is just crazy, so I ignore it. Are you losing enough oil to notice it dropping on the dip stick?
